David Everson, 41, of the 100 block of Elk Forrest Road in Elkton died after being shot in an apparent domestic dispute, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
Police said Everson's ex-wife called 911 to say Everson had pulled into her driveway on Vanderlyn Drive in Chesapeake City and was beating on the door. While troopers were being dispatched the scene, Everson tried to enter the home, police said.
When troopers arrived, they saw the woman's husband standing in the doorway holding a .22 caliber rifle and yelling for help. Everson was lying at the bottom of the outside steps with a gunshot wound to the chest, police said.
A preliminary investigation shows that earlier Friday Everson had sent text messages to his ex-wife and threatened to come to her home and hurt her husband, police said. Around 11:30 p.m., Everson came to the house and allegedly entered the home with a key.
When he entered, the woman's husband fired the rifle from the living room, police said. The woman was also inside the house with four children.
No charges have been filed. An investigation continues.
