NEW YORK—Convicted mobster Carmine Agnello has made the city an offer he hopes it won't refuse.
In a letter to Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Agnello, a reputed member of the Gambino crime family and the son-in-law of jailed don John Gotti, offered the use of his giant iron and steel shredder to assist in the removal of debris from the World Trade Center site. The machine in the Bronx can chop up a car in less than a minute.
"The large steel and iron beams that are being shipped to Staten Island could be shipped to the Bronx and shredded in minutes," the letter added.
A city official said the mayor was unaware of the offer.
Agnello pleaded guilty in August to racketeering.
