A West Englewood man has been charged with multiple armed robberies on the Southwest Side over the holidays, according to charges announced in Cook County Bond Court today.
Rondale Jett, 42, of the 2000 block of 69th Street, was charged late Friday with five counts of armed robbery, one count of robbery and one count of aggravated attempted robbery. In each of the armed robberies, he was wielding a black BB gun, according to court documents.
The robberies took place between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3, most of them in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, according to Asst. State's Attorney Farrah Brass. In most cases, he attacked women, some of whom were with children at the time of the robbery, Brass said.
In one of the robberies, a woman was walking home from a Jewel supermarket at 5320 S. Pulaski Road in the West Elsdon neighborhood, carrying home bags of groceries, when Jett attacked her and demanded money, Cook County prosecutors alleged.
In another incident on Christmas Eve, a woman and her daughter were at a RedBox movie machine at 6301 S. Pulaski Road in the West Lawn neighborhood when Jett allegedly approached and took the woman's credit card and PIN number, prosecutors said.
Yet another robbery took place at 6135 S. Pulaski Road in West Lawn while a women went to a Bank of America ATM to retrieve cash.
Jett was arrested by police on Jan. 3 in the 6200 block of S. Spaulding Avenue after he allegedly attempted to rob a 48-year-old woman at 6101 S. Spaulding Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. A witness nearby approached to help the woman and Jett fled on foot, prosecutors said. The woman and her helper flagged down police, and they later apprehended Jett in a black BMW, according to court documents.
Jett was positively identified in a line-up by each of the victims, Brass said.
Jett has in the past been convicted of several robbery or drug-related crimes. Most recently, he was sentenced to eight years in 2003 for theft and residential burglary, according to Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
Jett was ordered held in lieu of a $750,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Jan. 10.@tribdoyle
