Two cars of a 6-car Metra equipment train came off the tracks tonight near Union Station in the West Loop Gate neighborhood.
No injuries have occurred and no passengers were on the train when the two cars derailed about 5:30 p.m. near Washington Street, according to Tom Miller, a Metra spokesman.
The cars "did not tip over," Miller said.
Three crew members were aboard at the time, none of whom were hurt, Miller said.
Miller said other trains were able to make their way past the site of the derailment and only minor delays were reported to the North Central, Milwaukee West and Milwaukee North routes. An alarm was called for a Metra train derailment at 165 N. Canal St. where six cars were initially reported on their side, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
Miller did not know why the derailment occurred and said Amtrak would be looking into it because it occurred on their property.
