    On October 7, 1998, Matthew Shepard was kidnapped, beaten and left to die tied to a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Shepard was gay, and, at the time, the incident brought hate crimes back into the national spotlight. <em>The Laramie Project </em>is a performace based on candid interviews with Laramie residents reacting to the murder. Bridgeport Theatre Company is currently staging the play at the Downtown Cabaret, and after Sunday's performance they'll also stage a special reading of <em>The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later</em>, a follow-up piece that debuted on the 11th anniversary of Shepard's death. <strong></strong>
