2003 recap: Woods tied the cours record with a 9-under 63, one hsot ahret of Vance Veazey and two ahead of David Toms. Woods shot a 2-under 70 to move a stroke ahead of Toms at 11-under 133. Woods continued to roll with a 7-under 65 to set the 54-hole tournament record at 18-under 198 and take a six-stroke leade over Robert Allenby and Cluff Kresge going into the fourth round. Woods tied Scott Hoch's tournament record 267 with 3-under 69 for a total of 21 under par. Rich Beem finished second at 272.
It's a fact: The title was Woods' fifth wire-to-wire victory. Woods tied his personal best for fewest putts in a 72-hole tournament with 104 in 2003. He was 18-under on the front nine, 3-under on the back. The title was Woods' third at the Western Open and joined Macdonald Smith (1912, '25, '33), Jim Barnes (1914, '17, '19), Ralph Guldahl (1936-38) and Tom Watson (1974, '77, '84) as the only players with three titles. Woods has now won five different Tour tournaments three or more times (Western Open, Bay Hil Invitational, Masters, Memorial, NEC Invitational). Woods moved to the top of the tournament's money list with $1,729,307 earned in 10 starts. Nick Price is the only other player to top $1 million at the Western ($1,054,144 in 18 starts).
