DUI charges reported
•A 25-year-old Chicago man, injured Jan. 18 in a crash on Orland Park's northwest side that hurled his vehicle's engine into "a backyard several houses away," has been charged with DUI and improper lane use. Police said the resident of the 11500 block of Kolmar Avenue was westbound on 135th Street when he lost control at Partridge Lane and "went off road, striking numerous trees and a subdivision sign." He was taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.
•A 44-year-old Tinley Park man who almost collided head-on with an Orland Park squad car on the 16200 block of LaGrange Road is scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court Feb. 28 on charges of DUI, driving in the wrong lane, improper lane use and failing to provide proof of insurance. A police officer driving northbound at 11:48 p.m. Jan. 17 said the southbound Ford F-250 supercab came at him in the northbound center lane, but crossed over the median into the southbound lanes.
•A 47-year-old Marseilles man was charged with DUI, squealing tires and speeding during a 6:42 p.m. Jan. 19 traffic stop at the intersection of 88th Avenue and Briarwood Lane after he failed to convince police he was pursuing a motorist who had sideswiped his Cherokee SUV. Police monitoring traffic with radar clocked the resident of the 1000 block of Clark Street going 48 mph in a 20 mph zone. Police said no other vehicles were present, and they found no damage on the vehicle to support his claim.
Hit and run
•A 44-year-old Midlothian motorist was charged with improper lane use, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of a collision and driving without insurance Jan. 19 after he allegedly sideswiped another vehicle around noon on the 7100 block of 159th Street. Police cited the resident of the 15000 block of Central Park Avenue at his home. He reportedly declined to contact the Mexican Consulate and is scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court on March 8.
Shoplifting of alcohol
•A 32-year-old Orland Park man accused of attempting to shoplift top-shelf liquor from a Tinley Park department store on Jan. 30 to support his heroin addiction is scheduled to appear in Cook County Circuit Court on Wednesday on a charge of felony retail theft. The resident of the 15800 block of Centennial Drive reportedly told police he had intended to sell the alcohol to get money to support his $100-a-day habit. Police took him into custody after they said he pushed a shopping cart containing the liquor, valued at $1,325, from the store on the 16300 block of South Harlem Avenue.
Cell phone grabbed
•A 43-year-old Chicago woman who failed to persuade police that she mistook another person's cell phone for her own at a party was cited Jan. 20 for stealing. Police took the resident of the 5800 block of West 64th Street into custody after an employee at a restaurant on the 11400 block of 183rd Street realized she had removed the phone from a closet next to the room where her child was attending a party. The woman said she didn't realize she had left her phone at home and saw the employee's phone — which closely resembled hers — while chasing her younger child several times into the storage area.
Missed wife, hit mother-in-law
•A 32-year-old Orland Park man who allegedly intended to slap his wife has been charged with hitting her mother, who stepped between the two during a family dispute around 12:25 a.m. Jan. 22 in an apartment on the 15100 block of El Cameno Terrace. The man reportedly was angry that his wife and mother-in-law had returned late from a birthday party. Police said the elder woman had a mark on her left check and a scratch below her left eye.
Road rage incident
•A 46-year-old Orland Park man from the 15700 block of Ravinia Avenue was cited with battery after he allegedly threw a can of pop into another motorist's car during an 8:30 p.m. Jan. 19 traffic altercation on the 7200 block of Wheeler Avenue.
Booze theft alleged
•A 37-year-old Homer Glen resident was arrested Jan. 23 for retail theft after allegedly attempting to steal five bottles of Absolut Vodka, two bottles of Ketel One Vodka and one bottle of Johnnie Walker Red whiskey from a supermarket on the 14200 block of South Bell Road. Video surveillance allegedly observed the man place the bottles into his zippered jacket and leave the store.
Storage business burglarized
•A dump truck, 16-foot trailer, snow blower, snow plow and three tool boxes containing tools were reported taken Jan. 24 from a storage business on the 15900 block of South Parker Road. The vehicles and snow plow belonged to one person and were stored outside. The other items were taken from storage units rented by two other people.
•A drill and chop saw were reported stolen Jan. 23 from an unlocked van parked on the 13000 block of West Woodland Drive.
Roll of copper stolen
•Representatives of a home improvement store on the 13900 block of South Bell Road reported on Jan. 22 that a man and woman shoplifted a roll of copper. Video surveillance spotted the two, who are suspected of other retail thefts.
DUI charges alleged
•A 20-year-old Cicero man is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 26 on charges of DUI, improper lane use, improper turn at an intersection, transporting open alcohol and no proof of insurance. He was arrested Jan. 26 at the intersection of Bell Road and Glengary Drive.
•A 27-year-old Lemont man is scheduled to be arraigned March 1 on charges of DUI, improper lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of a crash and no proof of insurance. He was arrested Jan. 28 on the 12000 block of West 143rd Street after his vehicle hit a light pole and he left the scene.
