The Meyersdale Area Watch Group is fighting against the dissolution of the Meyersdale Municipal Authority with a letter, a lawyer and a proposed motion.
Members plan to call for a motion to rescind the dissolution at the next borough council meeting Nov. 13.
Thirty-four Meyersdale Borough and Summit Township residents signed a letter calling for the borough to reconsider its August decision to take sewer responsibilities back and dissolve the authority.
"We feel that this is not in the best interest of Meyersdale and is, in fact, moving us backward," MAWG member Jeff Irwin said.
Transfer history
The utility responsibilities drew fire in Meyersdale for years. The borough managed the sewer until June 2011. Members voted 4 to 3 to transfer the sewer to the authority for $5.1 million. Many council members have been replaced in the time since.
The new council voted to absorb the authority. The lone dissenter was a member of both the authority and the council, Bill McKenzie. The authority has until Dec. 14 to cede responsibility.
Call to action
The MAWG letter was addressed to Borough President Martha Curran. The group sent the letter to various media sources and government officials, including State Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar, U.S. Rep. Mark Critz, Sen. Bob Casey and Sen. Patrick Toomey.
Members asked the council 16 questions. These included the transfer costs, borough growth relating to the sewer system, usage of utility funds, approvals from government agencies, management of the systems, transparency and the future of authority employees.
