The annual Lifesavers’ Ball and blood drive is scheduled to kick off Saturday Jan. 5 at the Richland Fire Hall and will be open to donors and donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Lifesavers’ Ball has been one of the more prominent local American Red Cross events for more than two decades, American Red Cross Communications Manager Marianne Spampinato said.

Since then, the organization has since partnered with the Young Professionals of the Alleghenies and the Cinderella Project. This year will mark the first year for the YPA participating in the event.

The Cinderella Project which is co-organized with the YWCA is an organization that collects prom dresses for low income teens to assist with some of the expenses for students looking to attend prom.

“We have given out over 600 dresses in the past six years to girls across Cambria, Somerset, Bedford and even a few from Blair and Westmorland counties,” project organizer and YPA member Megan Seese said.

The goal of the event is to raise awareness for blood donations and to assist with the collection of prom dresses for low income teens.

One blood donation has the potential to save up to three lives, Spampinato said. The donations are separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets.

“This year we are scheduled for a double red cell donation,” she said.

The double red blood cell donation will be processed on site with a machine and will allow donors to give more than the average single donation of red blood cells.

All blood types are needed, but the rarity of 0 negative, A negative and B negative are particularly needed, Spampinato said.
