Six Somerset County residents were awarded Lucas Popernack Memorial Scholarships for study at Allegany College of Maryland in the current 2011-12 academic year. The scholarships are for use at ACM campuses in Somerset County or Cumberland, Md.
Karisa Boyce of Meyersdale is a nursing major. A 2010 graduate of Meyersdale Area High School, her work experience includes Morguen Toole Co., Shop 'n' Save and Food Lion. She is the daughter of Scott and Rana Boyce.
Ryan Fisher of Boswell is a general studies major. A 2010 graduate of North Star High School, he has worked at Lamonica's Restaurant. He is the son of Randall and Mary Fisher.
Caitlin LaBute of Berlin is a general studies major with a health-career interest. A 2011 graduate of Berlin Brothersvalley High School, her work experience includes CVS Pharmacy. She is the daughter of Carolyn LaBute.
Breanna Oakes of Rockwood is a social work major. A 2009 graduate of Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, she is the daughter of Pamela and John R. Oakes Jr.
Ashlee Slifco of Berlin is a nursing major. A 2007 graduate of Pennsylvania Learners Online, she has worked at Somerset Dairy Queen. She is married to Coty Slifco.
Shawn Ware of Rockwood is a physical therapist assistant major. A 1986 graduate of North Star High School, he works as a paramedic with Somerset Area Ambulance. He and his wife, Beth, have two children, Cheyenne and Savannah.
