  3. Gender-specific class program appears successful

EDWARDSBURG — Boys in one class, girls in another: That is an option for parents in a local public school district. Gender-specific looping is a pilot program in its fourth year in Edwardsburg. It is currently offered for kindergarten through third grade. “I think they don't have the distractions of having another gender in here, they feel very comfortable asking questions,” said Betsy Moyer, a teacher of a class of girls. Gender-specific classes do not use different curriculum for boys and girls. Both boys and girls will study bugs in science and Amelia Earhart in history. The benefit of gender-specific classes is that different teaching strategies are used that work best for the way boys and girls learn. For example, girls may receive a set of instructions, whereas boys are directed one or two steps at a time. Deb Crouch, principal of Edwardsburg Primary School, said they have discovered another difference in the genders: “Boys like to draw the picture first, then write. Girls like to write, then draw the picture,” she said. So far, the pilot program at Edwardsburg public schools seems successful — both in the eyes of administrators and parents. “Our parents really like the program from all indications,” said Crouch. “We've seen positive academic growth over four years. It's just one more trick in our box of tricks in order to meet the needs of students.” Gender-specific classes are one of the options for next year's kindergartners. The kindergarten round-up is Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Edwardsburg Primary School.
