  1. Mints may again be Chicago-made

    Tribune staff reporter
The loss of the Marshall Field's nameplate may be a bitter pill, but Field's new owner is sugarcoating the news with the prospect of returning Frango mints to Chicago. Terry Lundgren, the head of Federated Department Stores Inc., met with Mayor Richard...

    Tribune staff reporter

  7. Lousy service trumps name change any day

Renaming Marshall Field's indeed is a boneheaded move. But, beyond the cachet a name carries, what stores have to offer that's far more valuable is service. No--good service. Good service trumps a venerable name any day. It's what keeps consumers coming...

  9. Macy's clock? Loyal shoppers ticked off

    Tribune staff writers
For many Chicagoans Marshall Field's was more than a place to shop. It was a once-a-year holiday visit to the retailer's landmark State Street store to gape at the awe-inspiring Christmas windows and dine on chicken potpie beneath the Walnut Room's great...

  11. The final Chicago Daily News

    Chicago Tribune
Chicago's last afternoon newspaper, the brilliant and brawny Chicago Daily News, refused to go quietly. Its final edition on this day was breezily headlined "So long, Chicago." It died at the age of 102, the last of a long line of newspapers that tried...

  13. The University of Chicago opens

With less celebration than trepidation, the University of Chicago opened its classroom doors on this date. The evening before, founding President William Rainey Harper worried aloud, "I wonder if there will be a single student here tomorrow." In fact, 594 young men and women signed up to hear the lectures of professors who were already distinguished before they set foot on the still-unfinished South Side campus. Eight members of the faculty were former college presidents. Harper was the foremost biblical scholar of the day. Institutions of higher learning generally achieve prominence after a long, slow maturation. The U. of C. was designed to be an instant hotbed of ideas.

  19. Marshall Field moves to State Street

Crowds packed the sidewalks and streets on this date to watch Chicago's high society pour into Marshall Field's first store on State Street, a grand marble edifice with Corinthian columns. As was frequently the case, Marshall Field was on hand to welcome customers to the store that, more than any other emporium, would establish State Street as Chicago's premier shopping district.

  23. His wit was hard-boiled

WE think we know Damon Runyon, and we might think we're pretty jaded about him, but a fat new anthology, <b>" 'Guys and Dolls' and Other Writings" </b>(Penguin: 636 pp., $18 paper), introduced by <b>Pete Hamill </b>and edited and annotated by Cornell professor <b>Daniel R. Schwarz</b>, makes us see afresh a writer whose hard-bitten and ironic point of view prefigures the fictional worlds of "The Godfather" and "The Sopranos." There's much more to Runyon than Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra looking sharp and talking cute in the 1955 film version of "Guys and Dolls."
