Spring Break

Spring Break is the common term for the mid-semester break for college students, who often vacation in sunny beach locations. Fort Lauderdale, Fla. reigned as the top Spring Break destination for many years, but Daytona Beach, Fla. took over that crown in the 1980s, when Fort Lauderdale officials decided to shut out the Spring Break scene. Daytona's Spring Break peaked in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but Daytona Beach also shut down the event after the crowds grew to nearly 500,000 and the drinking and partying became too excessive.

Panama City Beach in Florida, South Padre Island in Texas, and Cancun, Mexico have since become other popular Spring Break destinations. Spring Break in Daytona Beach persists as a small, quieter event.
