7. Sprinkled with smarts

The gig: Sprinkles Cupcakes, the Beverly Hills chain beloved by bold-faced Hollywood names such as Tom Cruise and Ryan Seacrest, launched in 2005 with six workers, including founders Candace and Charles Nelson. The company has since expanded to 400 employees in 14 U.S. stores, two of which focus on ice cream instead of cupcakes. At its original Beverly Hills store last year, the Nelsons opened their first around-the-clock cupcake ATM, dispensing more than 1,000 of the treats a day. Sprinkles also peddles cupcakes out of a food truck and sells mixes at Williams-Sonoma stores. Candace is a judge on the Food Network show "Cupcake Wars."

  13. The Reluctant Star: Redding Roadhouse's Wirt Cook Finds Himself on Fast-Moving Food TV

If anyone else had asked, Wirt Cook would have said no. Unlike many chefs, Cook, the executive chef of the Redding Roadhouse, harbors no desire for stardom. He's more comfortable in the kitchen than on stage. But when his mentor Alex Guarnaschelli faced the finale on the Food Network's "Next Iron Chef," and wanted Cook to be her sous chef, there was only one answer: a loyal yes.

  19. Parenting roundtable, take one

One of the best things about becoming a mother is getting to talk parenthood with other mothers. At the playground, at the zoo, over wine. I've always felt incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such a wonderful (and fun) group of mothers. My own mother and mother-in-law, other family members and a multitude of longtime friends, as well new ones I've made since having my first child.
