1. Walsh waters tree of grotesquery

Change of Subject
For Sunday's print column I revised and expanded an earlier blog entry: “This is a serious time,” said the fundamentally unserious former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh during an interview on WTTW-Ch. 11’s “Chicago Tonight”...

3. Joe Walsh fertilizes the tree of paranoia with the rhetoric of violent revolution

Change of Subject
From the end of Carol Marin's interview last night with former Illinois U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh on WTTW Ch. 11's "Chicago Tonight." Carol Marin: Among the things you've said -- and some of them are fairly explosive: "We may have......

5. New book brings Vivian Maier out of the shadows

I would not presume to know, at any point during her 83 years on this planet, what Vivian Maier was thinking. But since she died in 2009, I suppose it's OK to make a leap and say that she would be made very uneasy and perhaps downright uncomfortable with all the attention that has been heaped upon her postmortem, since the discovery six months after her death of more than 100,000 photos, give or take, that she took during her prolific if altogether unheralded career as an amateur photographer. Some of them were posted on the Internet, and the hoopla began.

ESPN's "Octomom" family of networks hopes you enjoy this year's cavalcade of commercials and center snaps as it furiously tries to secure the two games it doesn't broadcast.

9. Local media perform at Newsapalooza

Local media personalities were the stars of the show for Newsapalooza, a benefit held Nov. 10 at Park West. More than 500 guests attended this third annual variety show that featured Grammy winner and Chicago native Richard Marx, who served as the musical director. Founded by singer-songwriter Marx and Roe Conn (WLS radio co-host of "Roe & Roeper"), the event raised money for Clearbrook, one of Illinois' largest providers of services for people with developmental difficulties.

11. Big-top operetta that time forgot will receive its Chicago premiere

As the young daughter of an internationally celebrated composer, Yvonne Kalman delighted in eavesdropping on conversations her father, Emmerich Kalman, had with other famed European emigres as they gathered around plates of freshly prepared Hungarian delicacies in the kitchen of the Kalmans' New York home, before the platters of food were brought out to the other party guests.

13. The Rahm identity shines through in 'Chicago Fire'

This is not a political story.
This is not a political story. This is a story about acting and the thin line between a performance and a public face. This is about aesthetics. Please do not read any ideological argument into the following or take what I am about to say as cynicism or...

15. The 'Check, Please!' effect

Popular WTTW-Ch. 11 restaurant show "Check, Please!" is among the most successful locally produced series in Chicago television and an oasis of public television reasonableness in an otherwise frenetic restaurant scene. The series begins its 12th season next month. In the meantime, it will be reruns up the wazoo. Once a season is finished, its episodes are replayed Friday nights (the show's traditional time slot), then again Saturday and Sunday afternoons. It's rerun often, said V.J. McAleer, WTTW's vice president of production, for the obvious reason that it is among the highest-rated shows on WTTW, occasionally the highest rated, with 150,000 weekly viewers. Somehow, though, if you have a DVR set for "Check, Please!" three airings a week seems wrong.
