1. Bigotry `n Dat

Staying away from this topic was always one of my goals, but sometimes it’s just not possible. Maybe it was because I grew up as a musician and race, sex, color or creed didn't matter. Maybe it was because I was exposed to prejudice in such great...

7. Grace now taking reservations

Tribune critic
Update: Call volume to Grace has been overwhelming; the three reservationists can't keep up with the traffic. It may be very difficult to get through. Grace's reservationists want you to know they're doing their best. Limber up those fingers, fancy...

9. 'The Art of Cooking With Vegetables' by Alain Passard is a keeper

In a world overstuffed with weighty, glossy celebrity chef cookbooks, it would be easy to overlook Alain Passard's newly translated "The Art of Cooking With Vegetables." But it would be a mistake.
Los Angeles Times Food Editor
In a world overstuffed with weighty, glossy celebrity chef cookbooks, it would be easy to overlook Alain Passard's newly translated "The Art of Cooking With Vegetables." But it would be a mistake. Granted, it's a slim book — 100 pages even. There...

15. Critic's Choice: Lively gastropubs for fun that can go late

When Ben Ford introduced his Ford's Filling Station in 2006, the fledgling gastropub was mobbed. The right idea at the right time: moderately priced comfort food in a rustic, no-frills setting. Big portions and hearty dishes — in other words, fuel. Now we've got gastropubs — a term that originated in London to denote pubs with seriously good food — popping up all over the city. Some, like Bar Marmont in WeHo, Waterloo & City in Culver City and the Parish in downtown L.A., hew to a British model. Others, such as Spanish Fly in Koreatown or the Tripel in Playa del Rey, are more eclectic. But one thing they all have in common is a loose, lively vibe, food made from scratch and not only craft beer but often well-chosen wines and inventive cocktails too. Hours tend to run later than conventional restaurants. Hungry after 10 p.m.? Head to a gastropub.

19. Big Sydney: So much for cutting the middle man

I’ve often been told that if you stand still, you aren’t going anywhere.
I’ve often been told that if you stand still, you aren’t going anywhere. If you are like me, you hear that and just nod like a dog staring at a yo-yo so the closet philosopher doesn’t realize his ying ran out of its yang. But in a way,...
