1. Circumcision study supports HIV theory

Circumcision is known to reduce a man's risk of HIV infection by at least half, but scientists don't know why. A new study offers support for the theory that removing the foreskin deprives troublesome bacteria of a place to live, leaving the immune system in much better shape to keep the human immunodeficiency virus at bay.

  3. Hopkins shows its intolerance by the reaction to Ben Carson's remarks

A year prior to our daughter's graduation from Tulane University, Ellen DeGeneres spoke during the ceremony, followed by Anderson Cooper, who delivered the commencement address. It was a pleasure to be a member of the audience of this widely respected journalist.

  5. Hopkins should be ashamed of the way it bullied Dr. Carson

In what possible way is Dr. Ben Carson's belief that marriage is between a man and a woman "in conflict with [Johns Hopkins University's] core values of diversity, inclusion and respect," as Hopkins Dean of Medicine Dr. Paul B. Rothman put it in a letter to colleagues ("Hopkins chides Carson for gay-marriage remarks," April 6).

  7. Hopkins seeking 'truth' no longer

As a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University some years ago, I feel called upon to remind this august body that the motto of the school is, or was, veritas vos liberabit, or, the truth shall make you free.

  9. Doctors order less expensive lab tests when they know the cost

If doctors were better informed about the cost of lab tests, they would request fewer of them for their patients or look for cheaper alternatives, Hopkins researchers have found.

  11. Hopkins tramples Dr. Carson's right to freedom of speech

I know it's practically blasphemy in Baltimore to criticize The Johns Hopkins University. But in forcing Dr. Ben Carson out as this year's commencement speaker the powers that be were not only wrong but were trashing his right to free speech and our right to hear him.

  13. Carson is right: Let's be civil

The silver lining in this cloud of controversy regarding Johns Hopkins University and Dr. Benjamin Carson may be that Dr. Carson's eloquence concerning the debacle of political correctness will get our undivided attention ("Dr. Ben Carson steps down as speaker at Hopkins graduation," April 11).

  19. Carson shows his integrity

Dr. Ben Carson doesn't need me, or anyone else for that matter, to defend him ("Dr. Ben Carson steps down as speaker at Hopkins graduation," April 11). His decision to withdraw as the commencement speaker at Johns Hopkins University was just another manifestation of his integrity. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for those, including Medical School Dean Dr. Paul Rothman and the graduating students, who feel Dr. Carson went beyond the pale in his recent remarks about marriage.

  21. Man sees race, indifference in experience with Baltimore police

I don't know how to answer Michael Hanchard's questions, but I understand why he asks them: "If we were a middle-aged white couple, rather than a black couple, and if the group of people who surrounded us were black or Latino, rather than white, would the attackers have been treated with impunity?

  23. Hopkins fails test of free speech

As a Johns Hopkins University alumna, I am deeply disappointed in the school's decision to chide Dr. Benjamin Carson to the point that he has stepped down from delivering the commencement address to the graduating class ("Dr. Ben Carson steps down as speaker at Hopkins graduation," April 11).
