Given a choice between a new Toyota Corolla or the latest iPhone, 16-year-old Allison Katz says that's an easy one. She'd take the phone. Texting drives her social life. She doesn't have a driver's license and hasn't rushed to get one. "I mostly...

  7. As kids head to college, beware liberal groupthink

I've been thinking a lot about college lately. You see, one of my more time-consuming tasks is to write college recommendation letters. It's an occupational hazard from extended time in the state legislature, Congress and the governorship. But it's one that I enjoy; there is nothing better than to receive notice that a hardworking kid has been accepted into the (often costly) school of his or her choice.

  9. Unusual $50 million gift for writing at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The wife of billionaire real estate mogul Sam Zell is giving $50 million to support the University of Michigan's acclaimed graduate writing program. The donation, to be announced Thursday, is believed to be by far the largest ever gift to such a program, and comes at a time when most major gifts to higher education are supporting science, not the humanities.

  11. Sam Zell's wife donates $50 million to Michigan creative writing

In my book, donating money to support creative writing programs is generally a good thing. But I'm -- hmm, let's call it conflicted -- over a $50-million donation to the University of Michigan's MFA program in creative writing from Helen Zell, wife of Sam Zell.

  17. A hint that affirmative action may survive

All but eclipsed by the speculation about how the Supreme Court will rule on same-sex marriage is the fact that the court will also hand down a decision in the next few months about the constitutionality of affirmative action at state universities.  But even if the court rules that the University of Texas went too far in seeking to assemble a racially diverse class, that may not mean the end of racial preferences.
