7. 'Larry Crowne'

The sum is less than the parts in Tom Hanks' first feature directing project since "That Thing You Do!" but since the parts involve Hanks and Julia Roberts as the film's stars, benefits can be found. Also the picture's co-writer (with Nia Vardalos), Hanks plays Larry, a newly downsized worker who decides to go to college.

  16. Philip Seymour Hoffman in 'Doubt'

To call Philip Seymour Hoffman an "actor's actor" seems too much a cliché for the surprising, nuanced work for which he is known. He is a creator of people, three-dimensional figures with faults and foibles that seem all too human.

  22. 'War' Backers Lack Will to Succeed

Something doesn't smell right with "Charlie Wilson's War." I'm not particularly concerned with the specific facts it has left out of its telling. But what has been left in feels compromised and dodgy. The film glides along on the polish provided by the on-screen and off-screen talent, and when the 90-odd minutes have run their course, you're left with a sensation of punches pulled and a $75 million budget protected.
