  1. Leslie Zemeckis sashays into the history of burlesque

During the shabby final days of the last of the burlesque houses that once dotted State Street near Congress Parkway, three of us — in possession of a few bucks and self-confidence fueled by fake IDs — entered the Follies Theater and saw a show that featured, among long-forgotten performers, a dancer named April Showers.

  3. Ray Harryhausen: Movie stop-motion master crafted magic

If Ray Harryhausen had designed only one sequence in his cinematic career, any one of his real lulus — let's start with the skeleton army battle in “Jason and the Argonauts” from 1963 — he'd still be the master of stop-motion animation special effects.

  9. Ebert's approachability

Mark Caro's piece on Roger Ebert (“Roger Ebert: Quintessential Chicagoan, A&E, April 4) struck a chord with me, especially the part about Ebert's approachability to the public.  As a technical assistant at the Chicago International Film Festival...

  15. Wiseguys Walken and Pacino on how it might end

At times it felt like an exit interview — the ultimate exit interview.

  19. David Chase: coming-of-age stories never get old

David Chase's new movie, "Not Fade Away," his first major work since concluding "The Sopranos," tells the story of a thoughtful teenage boy (John Magaro) growing up in New Jersey during the 1960s. Flat December light settles over the film's suburban snowbanks in winter, mountains of leaves clog the gutters in autumn, the Jersey shore beckons in summer. The teen plays in a garage band with an outside chance at fame; he meets a girl who understands him; he runs afoul of his father (James Gandolfini), revealing a generational divide; he discovers the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and, at the movies, Antonioni. "What kind of movie is this?" the boy asks his girlfriend as they slump before "Blow-Up," simultaneously mystified and rocked to the core.<em> "What kind of movie is this?"</em>

  23. Highlights of Chicago film fest travel far from Hollywood

In "Gimme the Loot," a loose, disarming bit of larceny &mdash; and one of the bright offerings of the 48th Chicago International Film Festival &mdash; director Adam Leon's Bronx-bred characters live to tag. Teenage graffiti artists on the run, the friends dream of the day they'll make their mark on the pop-up New York Mets home-run logo at Citi Field.
