1. Cannes Film Festival projects cross-cultural cinema

    — Invariably, the Cannes Film Festival chooses a striking image for its official annual poster. But the 2013 version can be seen as a particularly apt metaphor for the dual nature of the world's most essential cinema event. Paris-based graphic...

  7. Where have all the women gone in movies?

There's one mountain in Hollywood that even "The Hunger Games'" scrappy heroine Katniss Everdeen hasn't been able to move: the number of roles for women. Despite the success of recent female-driven movies such as "Bridesmaids" and the "Hunger Games" and...

  13. News of the Weird: Well-Earned Retirement

In March, twin sisters Louise and Martine Fokkens, 70, announced their joint retirement after more than 50 years each on the job — as Amsterdam prostitutes. (In February, the minimum age for prostitutes in the Netherlands was raised to 21, but there is no maximum.) The twins estimated they had 355,000 client-visits between them, and Martine noted that she still has one devoted regular who she'll have to disappoint. Louise, though, appeared happier to hang up her mattress for good because of arthritis. The sisters complained about the legalization of brothels in 2000 (with East European women and pimps out-hustling the more genteel Dutch women) and ensuing taxation (which required the women to take on more clients).

It may seem a little redundant, CNN’s idea of making a reality show starring Chicago.

  19. TV pitches: So I've got this idea for a show ...

Two weeks from now, TV networks will announce their new slate of shows for next season. The majority of these series will be variations on a formula. Procedurals. High-concept sci-fi and fantasy dramas. Nighttime soaps. Comedies starring familiar faces. This is how it works. Out-of-the-ordinary shows tend to be too risky when the goal is big ratings.
