1. Critic's Choice: 'Silver Linings Playbook'

If you follow the movies, you've long heard about "Silver Linings Playbook," David O. Russell's film that took the Oscar-predictive People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. If you're smart, you'll see it right now, before all your friends tell you how good it is and ruin your chances of enjoying it for yourself. Rich in life's complications, it will make you laugh, but don't expect it to fit in any snug genre pigeonhole. Dramatic, emotional, even heartbreaking, as well as wickedly funny, it stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence doing wonderful work as a pair of obsessive, unbalanced individuals whose lives threaten to spiral out of control on a daily basis. This film has the rare gift of going its own way, a complete success from a team of singular talents.

  5. Director Daniels serves up a heap of Southern-fried scandal in 'Paperboy' ★★

Talk about your beasts of the Southern wild! In director Lee Daniels' jacked-up bayou melodrama "The Paperboy," taken from the comparatively sane 1995 potboiler by Pete Dexter, a screen full of charismatic actors do their damnedest not to turn into a screen full of overactors in the service of a lurid Florida Gothic. But let's be clear here. To say "The Paperboy" doesn't work is one thing; to say it's dull is a lie. This movie is berserk, which is more interesting than "eh."

  17. 'To the Wonder' frustrates Toronto audiences, but should it?

  19. How Chicago's Teacher Strike Explains the Education De-revolution

Several good friends of mine work as Chicago Public School teachers, and as the strike continues this week, I can’t help but point out it seems like Chicago’s great at coughing up money for Olympic bids, NATO summits, and TIFF slush funds, but pay a public school teacher for the extra time she’s being asked to work? There’s just no money in the budget! Times are hard!

  23. Elle Fanning roots Sally Potter's new movie, 'Ginger and Rosa'

TELLURIDE, Colo. -- The new film “Ginger and Rosa” by English filmmaker Sally Potter screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival high in the mountains of Colorado. A tale drawn in no small part from Potter’s own life, the movie follows two young girls through a coming-of-age story set against the early '60s backdrop of nuclear disarmament protests and the Cuban missile crisis. With stirring performances by relative veteran Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert, the film is on the fall festival circuit in search of U.S. distribution.
