  1. Reel Critics: This 'Playing' is no keeper

"Playing for Keeps" employs every cliché in the PG-13 romantic comedy playbook. But the comedy is in short supply as the laughs prove to be few and far between. The end result is a big, steaming bowl of romantic mush with little connection to the relationship realities of anyone in the audience.

  3. Q&A: 'This is 40' star Leslie Mann and writer/director Judd Apatow

Ridiculously, unjustly, few Oscar prognosticators include “This is 40” star Leslie Mann or her husband, writer-director Judd Apatow, on lists of likely nominees. Thing is, Apatow’s a member of the Academy—will he vote for himself?

  9. Film review: 'Playing for Keeps' should be lost

It is clear from its opening weekend that "Playing for Keeps" is one of the biggest bombs of the year, both critically and commercially. Review database Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 2-percent "Fresh" rating for its one positive review vs. 59 negative ones (and Leonard Maltin gives it only faint praise in his "positive" review). It has also flopped at the box office, opening in sixth place on a weekend when the top five films have all been out for at least three weeks.

  11. 'Playing for Keeps': Why does football keep sacking soccer at the box office?

The last 15 years have been, in some respects, the glory days of sports movies. I don't mean this in a qualitative sense -- "Remember The Titans" isn't exactly "The Natural" -- but it's certainly a time when sports movies have prospered.

  13. Review: 'Playing for Keeps' scores a few points for Gerard Butler

The idea underlying "Playing for Keeps," the new romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler, is basic: A well-toned guy who is good with kids is the ultimate aphrodisiac for sex-starved soccer moms. Three very good actresses are squandered to prove the point....
