1. 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'

Stephen Chbosky's own adaptation of his novel is a heartfelt, beautifully played treat. Logan Lerman plays a high-school freshman who feels completely out of step with others, until two stepsiblings (Emma Watson, Ezra Miller) make him a living project of sorts, steering him through many coming-of-age rites - not the least of which is first love.

5. Logan Theatre reviving some forgotten -- or never known -- trashy movies

There are raunchy, trashy, terrible movies. And then there is "Intrepidos Punks," in a class all its own. An exploitation artifact from early 1980s Mexico (there is some dispute about the film's exact date), it pits the berserk against the berserker: Punk biker gang versus corrupt law enforcement.

7. TV review: 'Shameless' a sharp, bittersweet, wonderful mess

RedEye
I've never been much of a fan of Frank Gallagher, the patriarch of the perpetually down-but-never-out Gallagher kids of Chicago's South Side on "Shameless" (8 p.m. CT Jan. 13, Showtime; 3 stars). But I love the show. It's not that William H. Macy doesn't...

11. Q&A: William H. Macy of 'The Sessions'

When “The Sessions” co-star William H. Macy came to Chicago in the early 1970s, he briefly worked as a waiter at former Lincoln Park bar Le Pub. He made more money, he says, as a carpenter.

We’ve seen these stories thousands of times, but ya know what? If you make them well, nobody will complain. That’s why this movie is getting great word of mouth and positive reviews. The fact that the best-selling book was adapted for the...

17. 'Toys in the Attic' review: Not to be confused with 'Toy Story'

**1/2 (out of four)
**1/2 (out of four) Knowing that Forest Whitaker and Evanston-raised Joan Cusack lend their voices to “Toys in the Attic” actually tells you almost nothing about the film. The stars sound unrecognizable in this Czech Republic-made, stop-...

19. Zoo Ball surprise: The Village People

Against the backdrop of roaring lions and tigers, the Women's Board of Lincoln Park Zoo hosted its 35th annual Zoo Ball July 13th. The rain didn't dampen the spirits of more than 1,100 black-tie clad guests as they mixed and mingled in three adjoining tents on the zoo grounds. "This evening's theme, 'The Great Catsby' acknowledges the beauty of the world's big cats and invites guests to experience a grand time with friends who share a love of our wild animals," said Zoo President and CEO Kevin Bell.

21. Emmy nominations reinforce Chicago's rep as comedy training ground

Nominees for the 64th Primetime Emmys include several former Chicagoans, continuing a trend from years past. The 2011 winner for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, Plainfield native and “Mike & Molly” star Melissa McCarthy, was again nominated in that category as well as outstanding guest actress for her much-lauded performance as host on “Saturday Night Live.”

23. Emmy nominations 2012: My knee-jerk reactions

The 2012 Emmy nominations are in the books and my first-blush reactions are mixed. Some surprises left me smiling while I was scratching my head about a few perennial nominations. And of course I have to bitch about them all. So here's a quick list of the noms that made me happy and not so much.
