  1. Highbrow films (such as 'Frost/Nixon') wait and see

<a href="http://www.sonyclassics.com/index.php">&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve Loved You So Long&rdquo;</a> is the kind of acclaimed foreign-language movie that should do solid business in unprovincial locations such as New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Nashville and St. Louis. Ten weeks after Sony Pictures Classics first released the film, though, the Kristin Scott Thomas drama still hasn't reached any one of those cities. <b>&#182;</b> The holdup? The awards season. <b>&#182;</b> Hollywood's annual self-celebration carnival kicks into high gear this weekend with the <a href="http://www.goldenglobes.org/goldenglobeawards/index.html">Golden Globe</a> awards, followed by Jan. 22's nominations for the Oscars. As soon as the dust settles, the makers of some of the year's best-reviewed films will see what commercial benefits they stand to reap. <b>&#182;</b> Much of the chatter around town has focused on predictable award issues: Will Sean Penn from <a href="http://www.filminfocus.com/focusfeatures/film/milk/">&ldquo; Milk&rdquo;</a> prevail over "<a href="http://www.frostnixon.net/"> Frost/Nixon&rsquo;s&rdquo;</a> Frank Langella, or will voters figure out if they prefer Kate Winslet for being emotionally naked in <a href="http://www.revolutionaryroadmovie.com/">&ldquo;Revolutionary Road&rdquo;</a> or physically naked in <a href="http://www.thereader-movie.com/">&ldquo;The Reader.&rdquo;</a>

  5. 'Marley & Me' and a big Christmas audience

"Marley & Me," the tale of a boisterous dog, led a strong pack of movies at the box office over the weekend, but together, they still couldn't pull this year's movie attendance out of the doghouse.

  7. Michael Shannon's 'Revolutionary Road'

Michael Shannon is a big, imposing guy (whose head may weigh a whopping 15 pounds if one is to believe Internet biographies) who has played a lot of intense, imposing characters in such films as "Bug," "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" and "Shotgun Stories." In "Revolutionary Road," Sam Mendes' film about 1950s angst, Shannon cranks up the intensity to almost uncomfortable levels.

  13. During award season it pays to be Kate -- or Cate

If you're an actress, keep in mind that when it comes to getting nominated for an Oscar it doesn't hurt if your name is Kate.
If you're an actress, keep in mind that when it comes to getting nominated for an Oscar it doesn't hurt if your name is Kate. Kate Hepburn managed to do it 12 times, winning a record four as leading actress, more than any other actor. By age 32, Kate...

  15. Movie review: Revolutionary Road -- 4 out of 5 stars

    Orlando Sentinel Movie Critic
Did we begin questioning "The American Dream" with Richard Yates' acclaimed 1961 novel, Revolutionary Road? Or was he reporting something that began in the unquestioning 1950s? Call us "selfish" or "childish," but the marriage with two children, house in...

  19. Winslet piles up accolades

It really is an honor just to be nominated and Kate Winslet knows it. But after so many Oscar losses, wouldn't it be nice just to take home the shiny statue one time? Which isn't to say Winslet doesn't know what it's like to win other awards. She has a few of those.
