  3. Film review: 'The Avengers' fun movie but won't save the world

Superhero fans have been waiting for "The Avengers" since "Iron Man" in 2008. Since then, all the films featuring Avengers have included hints and references to the characters' upcoming collaboration. Some say what we've gotten is four years of commercials. I say it's been four years of building anticipation. The problem is that the film now has to deliver on four years' worth of hype. It's an OK blockbuster, but the bar is set so high that it can't help but be disappointing.

  5. Should movie stars rebut the critics?

There are two things that Samuel L. Jackson will not tolerate: Hotspacho and negative reviews.

  9. Movie review: In 'The Avengers,' a Marvel-ous team

"The Avengers"are here, and resistance is futile.

  11. Audiobooks are going Hollywood

When it came to reading a book out loud, Dustin Hoffman was a bit rusty. The last time he had done something similar was in New York City in the late 1960s, right after filming "The Graduate." A local radio station had recruited 30 or so people, including Hoffman, to read "War and Peace" on air, around the clock, until it was done.

    <strong>**1/2 (out of four)</strong>

  15. Movie Review: Marvel's The Avengers

When <strong>Stan Lee</strong> and <strong>Jack Kirby</strong> first created the super team they called &ldquo;<strong>The Avengers</strong>&rdquo;, I doubt that they could scarcely imagine the popularity it would enjoy today. Way back in 1964 when the title first debuted, Lee and Kirby were trying out a new formula when it came to superhero team-up books: create a book where the heroes didn&rsquo;t always get along. Up until that point, namely in the more perfect universes of <strong>DC Comics'</strong> <strong>Superman</strong> and<strong> Batman</strong>, the caped crime fighters generally co-existed with very little drama. The<strong> Marvel Universe</strong> would differ, with the heroes having more three-dimensional personalities and the conflicts that they bring. That was the drama that readers of books like <strong>The Avengers</strong>, <strong>Fantastic Four</strong> or<strong> X-Men</strong> came to expect, a veritable soap opera with muscles and skin-tight spandex. It works rather well in comic books since the dialogue is at times heavy-handed and the costumes a bit bright, but not always in real life.

  23. 'The Avengers': Superhero fun for many critics, and Fury for one

    24 Frames
Nick Fury of "The Avengers," or at least the actor who plays him, Samuel L. Jackson, was so upset by the New York Times' review of the film he had to tweet about it. But Jackson needn't worry too much, as many critics are finding the film a fun comic book...
