1. Interview: Kristin Cavallari shows softer side, sticks up for Jay Cutler

Normally it's Kristin Cavallari supporting fiance and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler on game day from the suites at Soldier Field, but during Cavallari's promotional appearance on behalf of her Chinese Laundry shoe line Saturday at the Von Maur store in Yorktown Center in Lombard, it was Cutler, father to their 6-month-old son, Camden, playing the supporting role.

  7. Judy Blume comes to a theater near you with 'Tiger Eyes'

"Someone came to us and said, 'Hey kids, do you want to make a movie?'" Judy Blume said with a laugh when I spoke to her by phone last month about the upcoming release of the film adaptation of "Tiger Eyes," based on her 1981 novel. "No, that's not what they said. But they had funding to adapt a couple of books into movies, and they asked us (Blume and her son, Lawrence Blume, a film director) which one we would like to do, and we didn't hesitate for a second. Because we always knew which one."

Is silence truly golden? Can George Clooney's tears bring Oscar happiness? Will Billy Crystal's yuks play as well as they did eight years ago? And could the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the first time bestow acting statuettes on two African American women on the same night?

  11. Black and white and 'Blue' catch the attention

CANNES, France -- Paradox! This is how it goes here: Just as the weather deigns to become a thing of sun-splashed French Riviera wonder, the 66th Cannes Film Festival responds with an 8:30 a.m. world premiere of "Nebraska," director Alexander Payne's first film since "The Descendants." It's a tight-lipped, melancholic black-and-white road movie starring Bruce Dern as an alcoholic Billings, Mont., man convinced he's won a million dollars in a mail-order sweepstakes giveaway.

  23. Cannes honcho Thierry Fremaux is Hollywood's inside man

When Baz Luhrmann’s "The Great Gatsby" raises the curtain on the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, it will serve, among other things, as an indication that the love affair between the festival and Hollywood is alive and well — much more than the last time Luhrmann opened Cannes, 12 years ago, with "Moulin Rouge." Back then, relations between Cannes and Tinseltown had hit something of a low, with few studio films of the late ’90s making the trek to the Croisette ("Beyond Rangoon," anyone?). When he joined Cannes in 2001, festival director Thierry Fremaux was immediately tasked by fest president Gilles Jacob with a peacemaking mission to the West Coast, and the decade since has been one of the richest for le cinema Americain on the Riviera — even if the biggest Cannes-launched Oscar winner of recent years was a French production: "The Artist."
