5. Connecticut victims: Lively youngsters, devoted adults

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — At the very start of their lives, the schoolchildren are remembered for their love of horses, or for the games they couldn't get enough of, or for always saying grace at dinner. The adult victims found their life's work in sheltering little ones, teaching them, caring for them, treating them as their own. The gunfire Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School left a toll both unbearable and incalculable: 20 students and six adults at the school, the gunman's mother at home, and the gunman himself.

  17. 'The Hobbit' is one film to rule them all at box office

"The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" stands to collect more gold at the box office this weekend than the dragon Smaug is hoarding inside the Lonely Mountain. Peter Jackson's 3-D prequel to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy should open to between $120...

  19. Hobbit movie splits critics' reviews

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has split the critics, creating a gulf as vast as the one separating Bilbo Baggins and Gollum. Such criticism could be expected from a movie that kicks off a trilogy -- yet is drawn from a novel that ran all of about 330 pages. So there's a bit of a slow wind-up here, something that has enraged a number of critics who wanted more action from a J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation. Here are exceprt from some movie reviews:

  21. Film review: 'The Hobbit' journeys into a lesson on frame rates

In the Shire, a Hobbit-populated region of Middle Earth, Mr. Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) is setting down — for the sake of his nephew Frodo (Elijah Wood) — a true account of his life's great adventure. Forty years earlier, a tall wizard named Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellan) induced the young Bilbo (Martin Freeman, who handles the role for the body of the film) to join a troop of dwarfs on a quest to reclaim their homeland. A very long time ago they were driven out by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo and the others take off on a great journey and....

  23. 'Texas Chainsaw 3D' is strong No. 1; 'Promised Land' disappoints

"Texas Chainsaw 3D" easily sliced through the competition at the box office this weekend — not that its rivals were particularly threatening. As the only new film to hit theaters nationwide, the reboot of the 1974 horror flick only had to...
