  1. 'Silver Linings Playbook' snags Spirit awards

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The persistent irony of the Film Independent Spirit Awards is that as much as they're positioned as the DIY antidote to the Academy Awards, the indie film with the most Oscars recognition almost invariably reaps the greatest rewards.

It's my final column of the year and, for that matter, the new millennium — not to mention of all time. Unless it isn't. I'm so confused. Anyhow, let's look at the highs and lows of 2012 — not that you have much choice if you're going to...

  7. David Chase: coming-of-age stories never get old

David Chase's new movie, "Not Fade Away," his first major work since concluding "The Sopranos," tells the story of a thoughtful teenage boy (John Magaro) growing up in New Jersey during the 1960s. Flat December light settles over the film's suburban snowbanks in winter, mountains of leaves clog the gutters in autumn, the Jersey shore beckons in summer. The teen plays in a garage band with an outside chance at fame; he meets a girl who understands him; he runs afoul of his father (James Gandolfini), revealing a generational divide; he discovers the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and, at the movies, Antonioni. "What kind of movie is this?" the boy asks his girlfriend as they slump before "Blow-Up," simultaneously mystified and rocked to the core.<em> "What kind of movie is this?"</em>

  13. Boston-bound on my birthday

I wanted to turn 23 in Boston. Or maybe I wanted to try to end the 22nd year of my life on a good note — the kind of "good note" that even a maestro would appreciate.   But first I needed to arrange a way to travel from Pennsylvania to...

  17. Moviegoing at the midnight hour

El Monte high school teacher Trevor Schoenfeld is an omnivorous moviegoer, the kind who wants to see films he's interested in at their first possible screening. For years, he's been willing to line up at the multiplex for the first midnight showings of mainstream releases, but lately, he's gone to theaters playing "Evil Dead," "Oblivion" and "Pain &amp; Gain" at 10 p.m. or even 7 p.m. Thursday ahead of their official Friday openings &mdash; sometimes getting home to his four kids before the clock strikes 12.
