1. The Dark Knight Rises

Usually bands have problems when it comes to the third albums. They have enough material from years of playing the small dingy clubs, and that fills up those first two CDs. On the third disc, they’re in the studio trying to write new material and it doesn’t always work.

  7. Q&A: Seann William Scott of 'Goon'

After a career spent playing what he calls “jackasses,” Seann William Scott has no idea why he was the filmmakers' choice to star as a nice guy in “Goon.” Even if that nice guy, based on real-life minor league hockey player Doug Smith, specializes in beating the crap out of his opponents.

  9. Bullhead

I love the fact that you can catch some interesting indie and foreign films at the Gaslamp Reading and not just at the Landmark Theatres. The last time I saw a foreign film that disturbed me was at the Gaslamp. It was Dogtooth. The movie I saw there the other night had only one disturbing scene, but it was so disturbing it makes it hard for me to recommend this. And that’s a shame, because it was good.

  13. This Means War

This means war with Tom Hardy. He impressed me so much in Bronson and has had great turns in Warrior and Inception, only to take a paycheck doing this silly movie. Now that being said, the movie was a little better than I thought it would be (but far from what I’d consider “good”).

  19. Movie review: 'Warrior'

"Warrior" is too much of a good thing. A family drama set in the ultraviolent world of mixed martial arts, it shows promise but finally hits things so hard, both literally and metaphorically, that it's hard not to feel pummeled yourself by the time it's over.
