Does torture work?
Does torture work? It is a Bush-era debate that has found Obama-era relevance because of a new movie, "Zero Dark Thirty," in which torture seems to work quite well. The film, an Oscar nominee for Best Picture, is being sold as a fact-based...

5. 'Zero Dark Thirty' nails it

You know the beginning and you know the end, but it's the way director Kathryn Bigelow tells the middle in her riveting movie "Zero Dark Thirty" that amazed me. I hope you see it. I'm going to see it again. It should win all the awards, for directing,...

7. 'No' is riveting historical fiction ★★★★

"No" is a terrific film, and word got out very quickly at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where the Chilean docudrama deservedly made a lot of noise even though it played outside the main competition categories. No less than "Argo," "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty," director Pablo Larrain's achievement feeds the debate regarding truth and fiction and how much of the former a viewer needs when watching a movie that is, by definition, the latter.

9. 'Zero Dark Thirty' a first draft of history ★★★★

To consider what director Kathryn Bigelow has accomplished in "Zero Dark Thirty," imagine the events depicted by the story if they'd been given the "Argo" treatment.

* (out of four) “It’s like ‘Die Hard’ but at the White House,” a studio executive probably said about “Olympus Has Fallen,” whose title refers to a breach of security in the White House. “What could go...

*1/2 (out of four)

17. Happy face/sad face reaction: 2013 Oscar nominations

As always, this morning’s Oscar nominations created a roller coaster of emotion. Shock! Relief! Fury! I should not get so worked up about this. Really, though, the nods for the 2013 Academy Awards had a few more big surprises than usual—or...

19. 'Zero Dark Thirty' review: The year's superior true-war story

***1/2 (out of four) And that’ll do it for “Argo.” Ben Affleck’s widely praised Oscar contender is plenty entertaining, but its sense of place and investigative detail don’t come within miles of the immersive power of...
