1. A potluck kind of year

If only it were so easy to pithily proclaim 2012 as the Year of the (fill-in-the-blank). But there's really no one thread that neatly ties together the Chicago restaurant scene these last 12 months. A restaurant that put Chicago on the culinary map 25 years ago closed its doors. Doughnuts became "a thing." Digging up mushrooms from the forest preserve took on high status.

  3. Lady Gaga sightings in Chicago -- lots of restaurant visits but, curiously, not a lot of clubs

What do Chicago restaurants Spiaggia, Table Fifty-Two, Girl and the Goat and Topolobampo have in common? They all feature former “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters” contestants in their kitchens. And, not coincidentally, they’ve all been visited by Lady Gaga this year.

  7. Top chefs have 'A Taste for the Arts'

Student performances and Top Chef stations were the main attractions at "A Taste for the Arts" benefiting the Chicago Academy of the Arts. More than 350 attended the free performances by students and alumni May 10 at the Harris Theater. The show opened and closed with the CAA Repertory Dance Company choreographed by Randy Duncan, CAA artistic director. Soloist Eleri Ward sang "Shy" from "Once Upon a Mattress"; alumna/soprano Jessica Oliver sang a piece from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino"; and classical pianist Su Jin Kang played Chopin. Rock band Semi Precious Weapons, featuring alumnus/frontman Justin Tranter, performed a high-energy number that had the crowd on its feet.

  9. Bar Toma: Italian fare inspires dreams of summertime dining

Tony Mantuano is on a roll. A local politician who flies on Air Force One these days calls him "my favorite chef." He's in the running — again — for the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Chef award. His executive chef at Spiaggia, Sarah Grueneberg, came thisclose to winning Top Chef a week ago. His star power is such that last year Levy Restaurants happily blew up their venerable Bistro 110 (which probably needed overhauling) to let Mantuano create Bar Toma (as in TOny MAntuano), a casual-yet-urbane food and wine bar that seems to be a physical incarnation of "Wine Bar Food," the appetizer and wine book Mantuano wrote with his wife, Cathy.

  17. Q&A: 'Top Chef: Texas' runner-up Sarah Grueneberg

Spiaggia chef Sarah Grueneberg didn’t win the title on “Top Chef: Texas,” but she did make an impressive showing on last night’s finale. The judges said that her and winner Paul Qui’s food was perhaps the best in the show’s history, and that the margin between them was slim. I spoke with Grueneberg by phone from New York, where she had just watched the finale and appeared on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” the night before.

For the first 11 episodes of Top Chef, Beverly Kim’s journey was a Greek tragedy. Castigated, chastised, verbally beaten down by fellow contestants, she was booted in an episode where no one deserved elimination.
