13. A steak deal, just like in olden days

Seven dollars and 99 cents doesn't stretch like it used to, but it still buys a steak dinner downtown. On the northeast corner of the Thompson Center, beneath "L" tracks that rumble and screech every other minute, Ronny's endures. Trendier steakhouses on Rush Street have become a business account expenditure and once-a-year occasion. Ronny's, meanwhile, may be the one steakhouse in the city that lists prices on its window.

17. 2011 Holiday Guide

Like the creeping tinsel at the mall, holiday shows in Chicago seem to start earlier each year. This season, it was “White Christmas” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire even before the trick-or-treaters had ventured forth from their stoops. But bear in mind that theaters know how much Chicago audiences love their seasonal entertainments. If, like me, you're an urban romantic in love with the classic downtown experience, this is the golden time of the year, full of family members enjoying the arts together and cramming in a live show between busy days and nights of shopping, eating and merrymaking.

21. Even a stripped-down 'Heights' still resonates

THEATER REVIEW: "In the Heights" at the Oriental Theatre ★★½ ... The current setting feels rather more like everybodyheaded for the Legoland version of Washington Heights. But as non-union "re-creations" go, this one is better than most.
The 2008 Broadway musical "In the Heights," the story of a mostly Latino community struggling to both move up and stay together, is now in its waning days as a touring attraction. Since the show last was in Chicago — in late 2009 — the...

23. 'American Idiot' is a loud, hard, Green Day lament

THEATER REVIEW: "American Idiot" at the Oriental Theatre ★★★½ ... For all their Berkeley punk-rock bona fides - unassailable and enough to send a certain kind of ill-prepared theatergoer headed for an early exit - Green Day songs are actually filled with hope and longing.
