  1. Scoping out the tide of birds

The first thing Ron Skleney did was tamp down our expectations.

  3. Getting 'birded' in Lincoln Park

Like at least one of them has been doing almost every morning since March, Mason Fidino and Kelvin Limbrick are standing in a flat, grassy patch north of Lincoln Park's nature museum, looking intently at sky and trees and listening like, well, hawks.

    RedEye
Giuliana and Bill Rancic made a move into the Chicago dining scene last year by pairing up with the Melman siblings (Hub 51, Paris Club) and chef Doug Psaltis to open RPM Italian. This fall or winter, the team plans to open another restaurant, RPM Steak,...

  7. Notebaert's natural look at food, plow to plate

The camera hovers inches above the lush tallgrass, the shot panning past the gold prairie that sways to the wind. This pastoral video imagery, projected on walls at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, represents time zero in the exhibit's narrative. We are in what is now Illinois, 200 years back, when 60 percent of the land was this verdant landscape.

  9. A whoosh of fresh air at lively DuPage Children's Museum

Let's pretend for a moment that you're raising your kids the way people did in the olden days, before traveling taekwondo clubs and chess club championships and daylong birthday parties at paintball shooting ranges.

  13. This year's upcoming museum exhibits

Glowing fish, giant dinosaurs, plasticized animals and more. That's not a description of the toy aisles at Target, or at least it's not only that. It also spotlights what's coming up in the new year at the area's family museums and zoos. Here are some of the events we are anticipating in 2013:

  15. 'Backyard Monsters': An ant chauffeur's story, set to Metallica

If you go to "Backyard Monsters" at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the new exhibition of big, animatronic insects and their much smaller, much more genuine counterparts, you probably won't catch wind of what it took to get some of the live insects there. Here's one story:

  19. Backyard Monsters: New Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum exhibit showcases nine species of live insects

On tonight's WGN News at Five, I'm checking out Backyard Monsters - the new exhibit at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. The experience is designed to make patrons feel what it's like to be the size of a bug - with giant robotic insects, and plenty of the LIVE variety as well.

  21. I Am the Worst: Larry David and Dogs Edition

By no means am I a confrontational person. I don’t get in random arguments with people over a perceived slight or social faux pas. Like most, I’m a fan of Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” where Larry makes it his mission to alert people to their rude behavior and thoughtless abrogation of the human behavioral compact at every opportunity. Whether it’s tsking someone for cutting in line or a poor parking job, Larry lets people have a piece of his mind. I would never normally do this—except the other day I had to.
