  1. Fan mail, of a sort, for the 'sequester'

There’s little agreement about anything regarding the “sequester” except that the $85 billion in cuts to federal spending this year will be implemented starting Friday. As The Times’ editorialized Thursday: “The irony is...

  3. On sequestration, Obama becomes extortionist in chief

At the end of 1995 and stretching into January 1996, the federal government "shut down" because of an impasse between President Bill Clinton and House Republicans led by then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The issue was increased taxes vs. less spending....

  5. American reaction to budget cut hype? Yawn.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is pulling out all the stops to warn just what could happen if automatic budget cuts kick in. Americans are reacting with a collective yawn.

  7. More bogus budget cuts?

I was surprised and pleased to see David Fahrenthold's article on the federal "cuts in spending" approved in 2011 ("'Smoke & mirrors,'" Feb. 24). I wished he would have pointed out the added smoke and mirrors that persists from this president. President...

  9. Charlevoix school district headed for own fiscal cliff

If it continues on its current path, by the end of this school year, the Charlevoix Public Schools may be teetering on the edge of its own fiscal cliff, with just $40,000 in the bank.
If it continues on its current path, by the end of this school year, the Charlevoix Public Schools may be teetering on the edge of its own fiscal cliff, with just $40,000 in the bank. Jeff Crouse, assistant superintendent with the Charlevoix-Emmet County...

  11. Letter to the Editor - Feb. 28

Conservatives exist in an ‘information bubble’ To the editor: I was fascinated by Ned Garrett’s conclusion (Feb. 22) that Barack Obama’s re-election was the result of “voter apathy.” Garrett professes the tea party...

  13. Payroll tax cuts? Not necessarily

All I hear these days are complaints that the federal government has raised taxes, dimishing take-home pay. That’s true: The payroll tax holiday was not extended. That holiday cut Social Security contributions and the like, amounting to a 2-...

  15. Ky. House bill provides funds for pension

    State representative
At midnight last Tuesday, the 2013 General Assembly came to an end. All the negotiations, all the hand-wringing over what bills would or would not clear the 2013 Kentucky General Assembly ended. After at least 25 hours of talks over two days and earlier...

  17. City faces challenge of finding ongoing revenue

You may be aware that Kentucky law requires cities to operate in the black. We must have a budget, and we must balance that budget year in and year out. It’s a challenging but good law. In fact, most people I talk with say they wish all levels of...

  19. Democrats missed their chance with Ashley Judd

Wiser Democratic heads prevailed last week as actress Ashley Judd was nudged out of the race to unseat Mitch McConnell, Kentucky's senior Republican senator. Did the eyes in those heads ever see Judd in "Double Jeopardy," one of the great damsel-in-distress movies of all time?

  23. Remove Medicare's straitjacket

Now that the budget "sequester" is in effect, Congress is shifting its attention to entitlement reform. There's simply no way to achieve long-term reductions in federal spending without touching the big health programs, particularly Medicare. Although raising the age of Medicare eligibility from 65 to 67 appears off the table, at least for now, the budget plan that Rep. Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) is proposing would shift a greater share of the program's growing costs to beneficiaries in the years to come.
