3. More on gun bills: Should government meddle in doctor-patient relations?

Mayo on the Side: Michael Mayo | Sun Sentinel Blogs
As expected, I got a lot of feedback on my Sunday column about proposed gun bills in the upcoming legislative session. Most of the comments centered on the "open-carry" bill, which would allow licensed gun owners to openly display their......

9. 'Silver Linings Playbook': Humanity in high-maintenance characters ★★★ 1/2

Hollywood movies, and even off-Hollywood independent films, have long encouraged us to empathize with unstable or psychologically troubled characters only if they're "kooky" for a little while, as a prelude to more palatable, normalized levels of craziness. You know. The charming kind. Happy ending, followed by a fade to a sunny shade of black.

13. Gym members sweat their dilemma

Dear Amy: Some friends and I are members of a pretty no-nonsense gym. The majority of members are hard-core athletes who train for upcoming marathons, while the rest of us are more "well-upholstered" Midwesterners trying to get fit.

15. Shame on you

Every so often a shame punishment will make the headlines. The most recent case involved an Ohio woman who was ordered to wear a sign that read, "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus." While this punishment may prevent someone from breaking the law in the future, what impact, if any, will shame have on a recipient's mental health?

19. Future bride says "I don't" to Pastor-Dad

Dear Amy: I am getting married next summer to a wonderful man. During the planning it has come to my attention that my fiance would very much like his father, a minister, to officiate our wedding. I am opposed to this because I would like his father to be "Dad" on this special day and not the pastor. I have a difficult time differentiating between "Dad" and "Pastor-Dad."

23. Terri McDonald: Jailer in chief

The Los Angeles County jail system is, in a way, two systems. There's the one Sheriff Lee Baca says he yearns for, a place where you do your time but also get help, a place enriched with educational and mental health programs. And there's the one under scrutiny by the FBI, a federal grand jury and others over allegations of brutality and mismanagement. Terri McDonald is now in charge of them both. After a quarter-century in the state prisons, from prison guard to manager of the massive "realignment" of prisoners, McDonald will be opening the investigatory and disciplinary books on the jail, with an eye to realigning it.
