  1. Steinberg: Taking in an NBA game

I sat on the floor for the Clipper-Laker game at Staples Center in seats right next to the Lakers bench on April 7. What a revelation. The NBA we experience on television and in higher seats is perceived very differently than courtside. It highlighted...

  3. Yoga might help boost mental health

As you stretch into warrior pose and inhale and exhale, you're not just stretching those hamstrings and lungs; you're also doing good for your brain with a practice that can stave off or relieve problems such as stress, depression and anxiety.

  5. Prospects for U.S. background checks remain unclear

WASHINGTON (AP) — The fate of a bipartisan Senate effort to subject more firearms buyers to background checks remains uncertain as seven Republicans amenable to a gun control debate are still likely to resist such an expansion.

  7. Excerpt: 'The Book of My Lives' by Aleksandar Hemon

I do not know how old I was when I learned to play chess. I could not have been older than 8, because I still have a chess board on whose side my father inscribed, with a soldering iron, “Saša Hemon 1972.” I loved the board more than chess — it was one of the first things I owned. Its materiality was enchanting to me: the smell of burnt wood that lingered long after my father had branded it; the rattle of the thickly varnished pieces inside, the smacking sound they made when I set them down, the board's hollow wooden echo. I can even recall the taste — the queen's tip was pleasantly suckable; the pawns' round heads, not unlike nipples, were sweet. The board is at our old place in Sarajevo, and, even if I haven't played a game on it in decades, it is still my most cherished possession, providing incontrovertible evidence that there once lived a boy who used to be me.

  9. 'Beyond the Hills': Possessed, inspired by history ★★★ 1/2

Of all the movies culminating in a rite of exorcism, Romanian writer-director Cristian Mungiu's remarkable "Beyond the Hills" stands alone.

  13. 'Spring Breakers' is one big disorienting party

It remains to be seen whether "Spring Breakers" turns out to be one of the movies of the year, but it is without question a movie of its moment. It has been a source of intense interest since shooting first started around St. Pete Beach in Florida last spring, as images began to surface via paparazzi and social media of young starlets Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson.

  15. On Theater: Still in 'Development,' but promising

Projecting mental illness on stage is about as difficult a task as any director or troupe of actors may face, but when done effectively, it can produce a mesmerizing evening of theater. In "Development," Vanguard University's world premiere of a new...

  17. Mariel Hemingway urges change to help others find a personal best

Mariel Hemingway, makeup-free and in sweats, is gorgeous. That bone structure, her cheetah-like build and flowing hair have been familiar for decades. What's disarming is her forthright approach to a rough family history and her determination to live the happy and healthy life that eluded so many of her relatives.

  21. A smart investment

The human brain is a marvelous instrument, capable of the subtlest thoughts, feelings and perceptions, and of dreams even the gods might envy. Yet for all our cleverness in other areas, we still know embarrassingly little about how our own brains actually work.

  23. The AP's complicated word-association test

In what may be the greatest victory to date for the sophisticatedly asinine organization "No Labels," the Associated Press has embraced a new policy against "labeling people." For instance, its widely used and influential style guide is being purged of...
