  1. Dining for the Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Getting a seat at Louisville's best restaurants on Kentucky Derby weekend can feel as impossible as a long shot's chances of taking home the roses. It's no secret that the city's culinary scene is among the hottest in the country....

  3. LETTER: Objection to hunting

Am I the only one in South Dakota who objects to the recreational killing of dumb animals, including our state bird, for pleasure? I stop short of labeling hunters and fishers as cowards, as others have done, but it is something to think about. No, I am...

  5. Comfort food rocks at Toasted

With the opening of Toasted in Winter Park, Central Florida now has an eatery dedicated to the ooey-gooey marriage of cheese and bread
From the get-go it has a primal ooze that shifts the body into comfort-zone overdrive. At its essence are two ingredients: a carb crunch followed by a liquid blanket of calcium. And now the humble grilled-cheese sandwich is evolving from home-style to...

  7. The Gossiping Gourmet: Nirvana in the fullest sense

The consistently good food and the changing seasonal menu keep bringing us back to Nirvana Grille in Laguna Beach. This attractive, comfortable space is divided into the bar area with tall communal tables for eating and drinking and the cozy dining room. A beautiful stone wall provides a backdrop to the bar while large windows give the room a light and airy feeling and small, original plein air paintings decorate the walls. Larger parties of 10 to 12 can dine at a private table in the back. In warmer weather, there is a covered outdoor patio upstairs called the Bliss Bar.

  11. If it's Monday, the L.A. Unified school cafeteria is meatless

Los Angeles public schools have just gone meatless on Mondays. But unlike the Los Angeles City Council’s resolution in November that simply urges people to observe a Monday without meat, the school system really has issued an edict. It stopped serving meat on Mondays last month. Of course, students could pack turkey sandwiches from home. But the school cafeterias won’t be selling them, and that’s a good thing.

  13. Bonds between parent, child remain strong

There's something special about a parent's one-on-one time alone with a child. Conversation takes on a different dimension without other people around to hear. Now that my kids have grown up — my youngest child recently turned 21 and is about to graduate from UCF — I miss those times and the intimacies they fostered. Perhaps that's what prompted me a few days after Toby's birthday to call him.

  15. Morrissey cancels Jimmy Kimmel appearance over 'Duck Dynasty'

  17. Food fight: Jimmy Kimmel ribs Morrissey for 'dumb statements'

Morrissey may be the man with a thorn in his side, but Jimmy Kimmel has a message for the tortured British singer: Come make your "dumb statements" on my show.

  19. Gourmet Vegetarian Fare At Six Main

The food at Six Main is outstanding. And it's made almost entirely from plants. The dishes themselves sound like simple, hearty fare: chowder, pasta, meatloaf, gelato. But some culinary alchemy transforms raw veggies into pasta and avocado into ice cream. There's no fish in the chowder, no meat in the meatloaf. You might not even notice what your food is missing unless you ask.
