3. Dining Review: Four Café's spring menu satisfies

Four Café in Eagle Rock feels a little like walking into a pal's kitchen. (OK, if your pal had a glass dessert case and a cash register right by the kitchen door.) The vibe is friendly and relaxed and the locavore food is worth lingering over.

  5. Clark Library trying out Pinterest

One of the hottest sites on the Web is Pinterest, www.pinter-est.com. What is Pinterest? It’s an online bulletin board, or pin board, where you can find out about everything from aardvarks to zoology — literally. I checked both topics and Pinterest covers them. Just the other day I was looking for some new vegetarian dishes and came up with three winners in about as many minutes by simply looking at the vegetarian foods board.

  7. Holy Food!: Kosher and Its Imitators in Connecticut

What exactly is kosher? The short answer is a religious certification given to any cooked or processed food that an observant Jew is permitted to eat. A satisfying answer in detail is not easy, so a visual aid may help: picture three identical matzo balls, each floating in its own bowl of soup: one at Shuman's in Bloomfield, the second at Gold's in Westport, and the third at Michael's in Middletown. The first is kosher, the second is "kosher-style", and the third is just an unaffiliated bowl of matzo ball soup. In addition to these three states of existence, the matzo ball itself straddles yet another stratum of culinary holiness: kosher-for-Passover knoshing.

  13. Red meat risks: One more reason to go vegetarian

The new link between meat consumption and heart disease, discovered by Dr. Stanley Hazen of the Cleveland Clinic, is just the latest evidence linking meat consumption to killer diseases that cripple, then kill, 1.3 million Americans annually. Dr. Hazen's study showed that carnitine, an amino acid contained in all meat products, is a major factor in heart failure.

  23. Film looks at the harm of 'Soul Food Junkies'

You’ve likely heard suggestions for making greens without the pork fat or “fried” chicken in the oven. All well and good, but the connection of “soul food” to African Americans goes way beyond editing recipes, and a new film asks viewers to think deeply about why they eat what they eat.
