A former social studies teacher and decorated platoon leader in the U.S. Marine Corps, the moderate Republican lost his nine-term congressional seat in 2008 after drawing heavy criticism for his vote in favor of a timed withdrawal in Iraq. After being defeated in his party's primary by state Sen. Andy Harris, Gilchrest supported the opposing party's candidate for his district, Democrat Frank M.
