Since November and December are months associated with giving, I would like to spotlight a few of the worthy volunteers who regularly give of their time to aid veterans. They give of their time on a weekly basis to chauffeur veterans to the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Diego.

  13. Shaken by shingles

It wasn't just any raking job; it was dethatching to get all the old, dead grass out. That's hard work. You have to dig in and put some real muscle into it.

  19. Dispatch from the land of boring weather

When it comes to the relationship between Southern Californians and massive storms like Sandy, the conventional wisdom is that such weather (“such” meaning the kind not commonly found in Southern California) can give rise to just a tiny bit of gloating.

  23. Time to dig dahlias, plant bulbs

We've had some pretty crazy weather this year, but nothing as bad as much of the rest of our country has endured. Our West Coast had a record number of days when the temperature was over 100, the central states had widespread drought with crop losses and now as I write this article, the East Coast is bracing for hurricane Sandy. Can you believe New York City is basically shut down? I'll take our blizzard and 80 degrees in March any day. It's been tough on our cherry and apple farmers and it's sad to see rivers like the Jordan so very low. Let's hope our weather patterns improve for next year's gardening season.
