  15. Today's Buzz: Should obesity be a disease?

The American Medical Association’s House of Delegates voted this week to declare obesity a disease. The vote effectively diagnoses a third of U.S. adults and 17 percent of children with a medical condition that needs treatment. The designation makes diagnosing and treating obesity a professional obligation for doctors, and will put pressure on insurance companies to cover medical treatments for weight loss. Some skeptics worry the new label could undercut the personal responsibility of people to eat properly and exercise, while others fear it could stigmatize obese Americans. Do you agree with the AMA decision? Do you think it will reduce, or add, to obesity in America? Do you think it will increase or cut health costs? Why do you think the nation’s obesity rate has risen sharply in the past 30 years? Talk about it!

  21. Keep It Simple

I worked with a personal trainer during college who, if nothing else, taught me that exercise does NOT have to involve complicated moves or a ton of machinery.  She certainly showed me how to incorporate machines into my everyday workouts, but she also helped me to learn basic moves that help immensely to build muscle, get your heart pumping, and increase your core strength.  An article shown on www.self.com about “old-fashioned exercises” definitely supports my trainer’s strategy of simple and easy-to-replicate workouts.  Below are 10 moves and exercises (inspired by Self’s article) that are simple but certainly effective and don’t require any equipment.
