Girl Scout Troop 47888 ventured to Hershey-park on July 9 for its end of the year trip. It was attended by Scouts and parents who participated in the fall fundraiser and Girl Scout cookies campaign.
Monique R. Broadus, fundraiser chairwoman, wants to say thank you to Jane Barvir, troop leader, and the volunteers, parents, grandparents, friends and family who traveled with them to the park to assure all the girls made it safely through Hersheypark.
She thanks Paula Burnett, assistant chairwoman, who helps whenever she is needed.
She also wants to say thanks to the Scouts and their parents who helped sell cookies.
And she couldn’t leave out a special thanks to her daughter, Anastasia Broadus, an adult Girl Scout, who she can call when she is needed and answers any questions she might have.
Troop 47888 extends thanks to Loretta Wright, executive director of Memorial Recreation Center, for the use of the facility to host their meetings.
Monique Broadus has been the fundraiser chairwoman for Troop 47888 for more than five years. She said while it has been a challenge at times, she gets the projects done. She admits that she keeps trying to “pass the hat,” but no one seems to want to wear it; so for now, she’ll wear it, but promises she will retire one day.
The Girl Scouts gather every Friday from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. at Memorial Recreation Center and invite all youths to attend and make new friends and perhaps become a sister to the Girl Scouts. And for adults in the area, if you have some free time, feel free to volunteer. There is always something for you to do.
There will be a day camp in August. Girl Scouts are encouraged to register as space is limited.
Breakfast planned
The men of Ebenezer AME Church, 26 W. Bethel St., will hold a breakfast Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m. as a Men’s Day 2012 fundraiser.
The menu includes eggs, fried potatoes and onions, sausage or bacon, biscuit and gravy, with juice or coffee.
The breakfast costs $6.
Guest speaker
Pacho Calvas from Guayaquil, Ecuador, is an elder who is responsible for the planning and development department at Verso Sur Church. He will be the guest speaker Sunday at Bridge of Life Church, 14 S. Potomac St.
Calvas visited the church in 2007 while staying in Hagerstown for six months as part of the Leadership Development Resources Internship Program under the direction of Terry King.
Indoor yard sale
On Saturday, July 28, John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac St., will hold a yard sale, sponsored by the music department.
Baby items, clothing, household goods, electronics, collectibles, books, knickknacks and Christmas decorations will be available for purchase. Items will be in the parking lot, the social hall and in front of the church.
Proceeds benefit John Wesley’s music department.
Funds still needed
Money is still needed for the annual For Our Kids’ Sake bus trip to Dorney Park in Allentown, Pa., set for Saturday, Aug. 11.

Pet vaccination clinic to be held July 28
On Saturday, July 28, the Humane Society of Washington County will hold a free vaccination clinic for dogs and cats of county residents.
It will take place at the USMH courtyard, 32 W. Washington St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The clinic is limited to county residents and proof of residency is required.
The vaccinations are Canine DHLPP, which includes distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and the Feline FVRCP, which includes panleukopenia, Feline Viral rhinotrachetis and calicivirus.
Rabies vaccinations will also be given to dogs and cats.
Proof of previous rabies vaccination is required to receive a three-year vaccination.
Dog licenses, which are required by county law, will also be available for purchase.
Licenses are to run concurrent with length of rabies vaccination.
The licenses cost $5 for a one-year license, $9 for two years, $13 for three years and $25 for a lifetime dog license.
Microchipping will be available for $15 for each pet.
The clinic will be a rain or shine event; however, due to the extreme heat the clinic might be rescheduled.
Anniversary
Pastor Jacquelyn Dixon of Second Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ), at 65 W. North Ave., will celebrate her fourth anniversary Sunday at 3 p.m. The Rev Barbara Scott-Spies of Hedgesville, W.Va., will be the guest preacher.
Movie night
Movie Night will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Bridge of Life Church, 14 S. Potomac St.
The movie, popcorn and drinks are free.
