Motivational speaker Manual Scott brought his message of overcoming the odds to students at The Providence School and East Jessamine High School on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Scott shared his story of how he went from being a poor student and high-school dropout to a successful entrepreneur and doctoral student.

Additionally, Scott shared his story of surviving drug abuse to the students. Scott is one of the original Freedom Writers, whose story was told in the 2007 film “Freedom Writers.”

The one-time dropout now holds degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and Trinity International University. He is currently working toward his Ph.D. in Chicago and is the author to “Take Matters into Your Own Hands: Dream Now!”

“I don’t share my story to impress people, but to impress upon them some invaluable lessons that literally changed my life,” he said in his biography.
