Bulldog Ranked as L.A.'s Favorite Dog

LOS ANGELES -- The bulldog has replaced the Labrador Retriever as Los Angeles' favorite dog, according to a ranking released by the American Kennel Club.

"Angelenos pride themselves on their uniqueness and originality, and they lived up to that by making L.A. the only city to have the Bulldog rank as most popular dog," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson.

"Despite the top four dogs being large breeds, a number of smaller pooches fill out the Top 10, including the Yorkie, Maltese, French Bulldog and Poodle, perhaps due to their prevalence as companions to the stars."

Here's a rundown of the top five rankings in L.A., based on breeds registered with government agencies:
1. Bulldog
2. Labrador Retriever
3. Golden Retriever
4. German Shepherd
5. Yorkshire Terrier

The city's 2008 favorites were the following:
1. Labrador Retriever
2. Bulldog
3. German Shepherd
4. Golden Retriever
5. Yorkshire Terrier

In Long Beach, Labrador Retrievers -- the county's most popular breed for 19 years in a row -- remained the top dog this year and last.
