ORANGE COUNTY (KTLA) -- A man was convicted Tuesday of luring a 71-year-old man onto a sailboat, killing him and dumping his body into the ocean off the Southern California coast.
The Orange County district attorney's office says 47-year-old Gary A. Shawkey lured 71-year-old Robert Vendrick onto a 23-foot sailboat in February 2008, under the pretense of meeting federal agents as part of a bogus investment deal.
Prosecutors say Shawkey killed him and threw his body overboard after leaving Dava Point Harbor.
According to prosecutors, Shawkey had convinced Vendrick to wire $100,000 to a bank account -- for a top-secret government computer software program -- and told him they would finalize the deal with the federal agents on the boat.
Shawkey, a resident of Mechanicsville, Va., is scheduled to appear back in court on July 22. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
