1. Orlando Fringe review: 'Serving Bait to Rich People'

Alexa Fitzpatrick describes herself as a ski bum turned bartender. But her one-woman show is much more than just another girl's life.

  3. At Nobu Hotel, serenity amid the chaos of Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Hotels open restaurants all the time. But a restaurant opening a hotel? That happens less often. But stuff happens in Las Vegas. The newest Nobu here is, indeed, a hotel. Not only that, but it's also a hotel within a hotel. And it'...

After months (nay, years) of hype, star chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s first-ever Nobu Hotel has finally opened, and at its heart is an all-new Nobu Restaurant & Lounge — the world’s largest, clocking in at 12,775-square-feet. The bowed columns of bamboo, colorful private dining pods and oversized light fixtures create a impeccably serene vibe. Dine at one of several teppanyaki tables or the sushi bar, and sample Nobu’s famous Asian-fusion fare such as black cod with miso. Book a room in the hotel and experience Nobu’s first-ever room-service menu.

  7. Critic's Choice: Cool, creative ceviche

Is ceviche poised to become as popular as sushi or sashimi in L.A.? It could happen. I'm thinking Ricardo Zarate is onto something as the Peruvian chef (Mo-Chica, Picca) gets ready to open a ceviche concept called Paiche. Raw seafood marinated in lime juice with chiles and cilantro and other elements suits a Southern California palate. It's cool and refreshing, packs in vibrant flavors and is light on the calories.

  15. Counter Intelligence: Spago makeover smooths aging star's wrinkles

The first responsibility of any great restaurant is to keep you in the bubble, the soft-serve cocoon of illusion where you forget the world exists for anything but your pleasure. And the newly redesigned Spago, from the moment you toss your keys to the valet to the moment you stagger back out again, gives good bubble.

  23. Dining review: Bites between reps and reprimands

The Chinese buffet looms large in certain circles. Bodybuilders blog about how to load up on protein, with articles like “A guide to getting huge on the cheap.” For obesity researchers, the Chinese buffet is the mecca of behavior analysis, where they discover obese customers are more likely to sit facing the food and less likely to use chopsticks than are normal-weight diners. And for the rest of us? We tend to fall into two camps: the squeamish and the ravenous. Those who wouldn't eat sushi from a buffet line if Nobu Matsuhisa himself inspected it first, and those who throw elbows to be the first to grab from a replenished tray of yellowtail.
