  1. Global Voices: Filmmakers chronicle Chinese run on French wine

What might have been a grueling, 25-hour flight from Sydney to London two years ago instead brought filmmaker and viticulturist Warwick Ross to a project that blended his passions for storytelling and wine as perfectly as the grapes for a nice Chardonnay-...

  3. Across the Table: The accidental sommelier student in Paris

Who wouldn't say yes? When the dean of the professional cooking school where I'd enrolled many years ago as a special student in wine realized he wouldn't have the time to tutor me, he proposed something else: studying in Paris. "There's a professional program given through the French Restaurant Union for junior sommeliers already working in Michelin-starred restaurants," he told me. "You speak French, right? I'll transfer your tuition money there. It starts in two months."

  9. Happy hour at Mancini Modern Italian

If you grabbed lunch at a downtown Fort Lauderdale soup-and-sandwich shop between Las Olas and Broward boulevards, but Mancini's outdoor bar caught your eye, return after work. On weekdays during happy hour, well liquors and select wines and beers are two-for-one, and some appetizers cost $5. Although this new posh spot by old restaurateur Jack Mancini lends itself to dinner dates, the vibe isn't lost if you just have small bites of shrimp scampi tempura over cocktails.

  13. Tuscany's 'noble' red

Two red wines of Tuscany are as familiar to Americans as they are to Tuscans themselves — Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. But we are far less acquainted with a third, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

  15. Terrific wines that don't fit any motif

My ideas for this column come about as a function of a winemaker interview, a holiday or season, a suggestion from a student or a reader or, often enough, a whim.

  17. Light meets might

My original introduction for this article was going to be something along the lines of: "Salami, no matter how you slice it, goes great with wines, particularly Italian barberas." But how you slice it does matter a lot, at least to me. I want my salami cut thin, thin, thin -- so thin it drives the deli workers at Dominick's a little crazy. Why? Well, I can't prove it, but I think salami tastes better that way.

Andre Tchelistcheff arrived in California on the eve of World War II to find a wine industry still reeling from Prohibition. His skill at winemaking, his peerless palate and his mentorship of other winemakers helped make American wine what it is today.

  21. Know your hops

Much more than just a bittering agent, hops are the soul of beer. They balance the sweetness of the malt and furnish a refreshing flavor and pungent aroma to beer, and American craft brewers are experts at showcasing this spectrum of flavors that hops lend to beer.

  23. Here's to a hidden gem in New York

While visiting New York, I found myself on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village looking for a bar. After surveying my surroundings, I determined that avoiding a touristy college bar was not an option, so I admitted defeat. But then something caught my eye.
