4. Restaurant review: Tasty pies, tempting cocktails at Hersh's Pizza

Hersh's Pizza & Drinks is exactly as its name advertises — a low-key restaurant and bar serving good Neapolitan pizza and simple pastas alongside old school cocktails and a wide selection of beers.

  6. The Review: Bäco Mercat makes it easy to get carried away

Navigating downtown is — there's no getting around it — tough. Even though I work there, I can never remember which one-way streets go which way. You can turn a corner and suddenly find yourself in the middle of Downtown Art Walk, with sidewalks teeming with thousands of pedestrians, or just as easily find yourself on a deserted avenue, shops closed up tight. The scene switches moods — active, lonely, thriving, haunted — from block to block and street to street.

  8. Critic's Choice: Restaurants with wood-burning ovens

Pizza joints, many boasting wood-burning ovens, are popping up all over the Southland like chanterelles after a rainstorm. But they're not the only restaurants working with oak or almond wood. Some chefs at other restaurants are lucky enough to have wood-fired ovens in their kitchens. They're tricky to use, but once mastered can be a formidable tool. Cooking with fire is ancient, and I'm convinced we're hard-wired to find any dish cooked in a wood-burning oven just that much more delicious.

  10. Best meals of 2011

The best meals of the year aren't necessarily about foie gras and truffles, or indulgent tasting menus, or even the technically best cooking of 2011. They're those dinners that surprised and delighted, that wove food and wine and friendship together in a meal that stands crisp and clear in memory.

  12. Dining Review: Michael's has its ups and downs

If you ask someone whether they like fast service at restaurants, they will almost certainly answer yes. It’s worth thinking about, because some things really can’t be rushed. These thoughts came to mind after dinner at Michael’s Bar...

  14. Sorting through the bloody mess of Bloody Marys

Molotov had his cocktail; I have mine — a fiery Bloody Mary, three parts tomato juice, 1 part vodka. Crumble in bits of crispy bacon, add a splash or two of horseradish and hot sauce for extra tingle. There's more to this classic drink, but that's the basic plotline, the can't-miss equation. Stick with me a moment and you'll know more about Bloody Marys than you do your own mom.

  16. Restaurant review: Barrett's Grill off to a fine start

Barrett's Grill, in Hunt Valley, is attractive and polished enough to qualify for night-out dining, but there's nothing fussy or intimidating about it.

  22. Wine of the Week: 2010 Bodegas Muga Rosado

I'm flying through my summer wines, already out of rosés. But I've got a new candidate for house wine: the 2010 rosado or rosé from renowned Rioja producer Bodegas Muga. It's salmon-pink in color, more structured than a typical rosé, has slightly higher alcohol and acidity and, of course, is meant to be drunk young.
