Making semifreddo is like playing with all the toys in the dessert toolbox.
Making semifreddo is like playing with all the toys in the dessert toolbox. Textures, flavors, fruit, chocolate, cookies — the home cook can reach for them all. Semifreddo is an Italian frozen dessert. It's similar to ice cream, yet the glories...

13. From the harvest: Strawberry tart

The strawberries you find at area you-pick farms and farmers' markets bear no resemblance to that waxy fruit from the mega mart. They are smaller, uglier, and richer in color and flavor. They taste like a strawberry should taste. They are best if eaten immediately, paired with fresh whipped cream (my favorite way to eat them), but if you need to store them in the fridge, just place them in a plastic bag with a paper towel. Their flavor will change, but they will keep better than being out all night on the counter.

15. Recipe: Classic pumpkin pie

If Thanksgiving is the classic American food holiday (or maybe it's the only American food holiday?), pumpkin pie is the classic ending for it. And while you can find all kinds of variations that take the basic pie in different directions — many of them quite delicious, to be sure — there still is no beating the original, as created here by former Times Test Kitchen manager Donna Deane.

17. Culinary SOS: Heilman's Key lime pie

Dear SOS: Bob Heilman's Beachcomber Restaurant in Clearwater Beach, Fla., has the most exquisite Key lime pie I have ever eaten. It isn't heavy — it is light but not airy like a mousse. The crust was not soggy on the bottom — almost like it was just made. Do you think they'd share the recipe?

19. Culinary SOS: Carpe Diem's Mexican chocolate pot de crème

Dear SOS: My husband and I recently visited downtown Napa, Calif. The amazing chocolate dessert at Carpe Diem is absolutely the best chocolate dessert I've ever tasted! And I am not a big dessert person. Satin-smooth chocolate with a texture between a pudding and souffle, but better. Not too sweet and topped with a small drop of whipped cream and then sprinkled with perfectly roasted and salted pepitas [pumpkin seeds]. Divine.
